ONCE UPON A TIME ON A TRIP TO FRANCONNIA ......
Our next trip took us to Franconia, a beautiful town in Mid to Northern New Hampshire. It is a little town with a rich and fascinating history, lots of things to do and lots of places to go. Our first stop was the Cannon Mountain Ski Area.
The Cannon Mountain Ski Area is a state-owned ski resort located on Cannon Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire United States. Cannon is located within Franconia North Scotch Park and offers 10 lifts servicing 265 acres (1.07 km2) of skiing (168 with snowmaking). Cannon has 23 miles (37 km) of trails and a north-northeast exposure and has the only aerial tram in New Hampshire. We enjoyed our time there learning to ski down the slopes, the people there were extremely kind and cordial, and always ready to help us when we fell skiing.
The next stop was The Basin: At the base of the White Mountains of New Hampshire is a beautiful waterfall at this site is a granite pothole 20 feet in diameter called the basin. It is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. The Basin has been smoothed by small stones and sand, whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. Below the Basin is a water-eroded rock formation called the Old Man's Foot. The Basin can be accessed from the northbound and southbound directions and has its own marked exits. There are picnic tables and walking paths, as well as hiking trails. We couldn't help but take a walk down this basin, there were multiple families talking down the trails, stopping to take pictures or kiss at the bridges, we did too. it is about a 5-minute walk to get down to the basin and about 7 minutes to climb up to the main road.
Finally stopped at the Flume gorge which is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart. The entire loop takes approximately 1.5 hours and finishes at the Flume Building (unfortunately, we did not complete this trip because our phone batteries were running low and network connectivity in this area was not ideal.) The walk includes uphill walking and lots of stairs. The boardwalk allows you to look closely at the growth of flowers, ferns, and mosses found in the area. It was time well spent altogether.
