TIPS TO GROW HEALTHY NATURAL HAIR
Lately, we have gotten a lot of questions on how we grew our natural hair and I thought what better way to answer these questions but to provide a place for reference. The funny thing is I wasn't really intentionally growing our hair, was just living each day with normal braids and having fun trying cornrows and twists on Chikito's hair and on my hair. check out my hair page https://www.patycon.com/p/natural-hair-journeybraids.html for more.
Okay now, let's dive into it. The first tip I will like to share is:-
1. Decide if you want to go natural
Keeping natural hair is not easy as it looks so it's important to make sure it's your decision and you are not pressured into it or doing it for someone else. I remember when I decided to cut my then-permed hair I was so impressed by my little sister's hair, Yeah she had beautiful natural hair and I envied how she grew her hair in less time than my permed hair was growing lol! so I decided to cut mine and grow it again. little did I know that natural hair requires a lot of work and patience. yep, guys, I learned the hard way lol!
After some months of googling and watching youtube videos, I finally got a hang of it and decided to do this natural hair thing while having fun. My main reason for watching all these videos was really not to grow my hair but rather to find easier ways to braid and treat my hair since I do all my hairstyles by myself, from braids to crotchet to African threading, every hairstyle since I went natural I do by myself. so yes it has to be a choice. Your choice.
2. Always Do protective Styles
Tip #2 is to always put your hair in protective styles. Again I will like to emphasize that I wasn't intentionally growing my hair, I was always trying styles on my hair mostly to better my braiding skills, and later down the road I realized all these styles I was doing, not only were they protective styling but they were eventually growing my hair. Some protective hairstyles I love and I do a lot are box braids; my favorite hairstyles, African threading, and twists. Now I have done cornrows and crochet styles once or twice but I realized it exerts a lot of stress on my hair and breakage. The crochet needle and having to blow dry my hair before doing a cornrow just bores me out of these styles so I don't do these anymore on my hair nor Chickito's hair; he loves twists more. However, all these styles and more I am not aware of are good protective styles to use on your natural hair. Please share in the comment section more protective styles you know of that we can benefit from too. T for THANKS!
3. Always Moisturise your hair
Tip # 3 is to always moisturize your hair, especially in protective styles. Whether you have your hair in box braids, African threads, twists, or not at all, always moisturize your hair. I cannot emphasize this more. Now you know all my blogs are based on experience. Here is the story; I used to think if I just do my box braid and leave my hair alone it will grow like wild grass. Yeah I tried that and then I tried moisturizing my protective styles and not only did I notice growth but health too. Some products I use to moisturize my hair are water (most important), Cantu leave-in conditioner. But to be 100% honest my go-to moisturizer is water. Please share in a comment on your go-to hair moisturizer and what works for you.
4. Use Oil treatments
My tip # 3 is oil treatments. After moisturizing, I make sure to follow up with some hair oil. Often what I do is mix my water with the oil in my spray bottle and shoot two birds with one stone. I do this as often as I can. mostly at night few hours before bedtime or on weekends in the afternoon or simply when I have time and while doing this I massage my scalp. It enhances hair growth I learned. I usually use the following oils depending on which I have available at the time; Shea butter, Avocado oil, coconut oil, aloe vera oil. my favorite is shea butter. Please share your favorite or go-to oil treatments in the comment section. Thanks
5. Deep Condition and Shampoo
My last and final tip is to deep condition your hair on wash days always and shampoo. There are many ways and products to deep condition your hair but my favorite and what I use on our hair is blended aloe vera, fenugreek seed, avocados, bananas, and coconut butter. Sometimes I just blend it all and use it on my hair for at least 5 hours or overnight. Sometimes I use two or three of these products. Then definitely wash off with some shampoo (Cantu). If I am being honest guys sometimes I use liquid African black soap as my shampoo when I run out of shampoo and I am lazy to get one. It works for me either way. lol!.
So guys those are my tips on how to grow natural hair and how we grew our natural hair. Thanks for reading and sharing. After all, this is said and done I will like to say hair or no hair beauty is subjective and to us keeping natural hair is a way of having fun and not necessarily growing hair or any other reason. We strive to have fun in whatever we do. I hope you have fun growing your hair or cutting your hair or whatever your choose to do. Make sure it makes you happy ๐ .
